Earlier in the week Jacob took me on a wonderful surprise date to the Boardwalk!! Corey Feldman (of "The Coreys" fame) was playing with his band followed by a showing of The Lost Boys. The show itself was not good, in fact it was pretty laughable. The band played their new concept album in its entirety which was bad. They obviously take themselves a little too seriously. At the end of the show they covered a few songs off The Lost Boys soundtrack which wasn't bad, they should be a cover band.
So for those of you who don't know... The Lost Boys is a vampire movie from 1987 that starred the Coreys (Haim & Feldman) and Keifer Sutherland. It takes place in Santa Carla which is really Santa Cruz, as it was all filmed there, especially at the Boardwalk. Daniel and I somehow convinced Grandma Charlie to rent this movie for us on a weekend in Oakhurst way back when. She watched about five minutes of it and then went to bed disgusted, but remarkably she let us finish watching it! Since then it has been absolutely one of my favorite movies, right up there with Dirty Dancing. Jacob grew up watching it too and it was something special we bonded over long ago, along with a general love for movies starring the Coreys. Sooo long story short was that it was REALLY cool to go and see Feldman play in Santa Cruz, even if the music wasn't that great. We didn't stay to watch the movie; there were no good seats for that. And randomly we found my Bailey from my John Muir days there! So awesome, hadn't seen her in 10 years so it was really great to run into her, especially at such a random venue.
We're spending our 4th of July at home, doing little projects and trying to stay out of the heat. That said I've actually spent a fair amount of time outside doing yardwork. I made some ceviche that we'll eat with our BBQ'd tri-tip a little later tonight. Right now I'm taking a break from the yardwork to watch a little tv in front of a blowing fan. Hopefully we'll see some fireworks tonight, I think we'll sit on our own roof and see what the area has to offer. Hope you all are having a safe and happy 4th!
A quote to think about from Independence Day:
Mankind -- that word should have new meaning for all of us today.
We can't be consumed by our petty differences anymore.
We will be united in our common interests.
Perhaps its fate that today is the 4th of July, and you will once again be fighting for our freedom, not from tyranny, oppression, or persecution -- but from annihilation.
We're fighting for our right to live, to exist.
And should we win the day, the 4th of July will no longer be known as an American holiday, but as the day when the world declared in one voice:
"We will not go quietly into the night!
We will not vanish without a fight!
We're going to live on!
We're going to survive!"
Today, we celebrate our Independence Day!
