PhytoNutrients!!! And Fall Storms.

An iPhone cannot do justice to the color of our apple tree right now. I tried and though the yellow is vibrant, it doesn't compare. When you stand in my living room and look out onto the tree its positively aglow.

Last week a little rain and a lot of wind took all the leaves off the trees downtown. By evening when I went home, I wanted a rake so I could make a pile and dive in. This was early in the week, by the weekend we were in full on winter storm and its not even winter yet. Enough weather that we were awoken on Sunday when our cell phones went off with the classic emergency alert sound, to tell us that our county was on the lookout for urban and stream flooding. Thankfully it seems the forecast was a little overboard, though it was wet for sure.

So how did we spend the rainy weekend? We stayed in doors and watched a variety of documentaries on Netflix. We watched historical documentaries on Auschwitz, hippy dippy world changing films, and pro-veganism/raw food movies. An interesting range to be sure. The standouts were: Food Inc., Fat Sick & Nearly Dead, and 2012: Time for Change. While we won't be taking up the practice of psychedelic awakening (as promoted in 2012), we have talked about changing our food habits a bit. We're going to start eating a little cleaner and even will incorporate juicing into our days. More veggies, more awareness of how our food made it to our table and a reinvigorated commitment to home gardening and self sustenance.

To that end we bought a juicer today and here is our dessert from tonight: blueberries, persimmons, carrots & celery. Just went with what was already in the house, but had some fun getting our phytonutrients!

Other healthy habits of the moment include the Squat-A-Thon. Who doesn't love squats? Also trying to hold plank every day with the target of adding 5 seconds per day.

And because I took these pictures just to share on here, and haven't done it yet, here's a glimpse of our quiet thanksgiving for two.
Persimmon cranberry sauce - with persimmons from our tree. A recipe that a friend sent me when I was searching for new ways to use my persimmons. Now I can't imagine a Thanksgiving meal without it.

Just the two of us meant no big bird. One breast (right) was brined and roasted as I do the big bird each year. The other was deep fried with cajun spices. Both turned out really well.

Dinner for two!! Small turkey but all the sides.
And a full and delicious plate!
